Joe Bembynista Bio

After serving our country in the U.S. Navy, I returned home to Chicago to serve the City of Chicago as a police officer and an instructor at City Colleges of Chicago. After 49 years of service, I now want to serve the citizens of Illinois and the 19th District. The State of Illinois has had enough corruption and self-serving politicians and it is time for a change. We need elected officials who are in touch with the people and will listen. After a life time of service, I know the problems the people of Illinois face and will fight for pension reform and accountability with the goal of making Illinois a proud state once again.

I have lived on the north side of Chicago most of my life and have volunteered in our community for nearly 30 years. As a City employee, I am both a beneficiary – and a victim – of the public pension system. It is not the workers who are the cause of the problem. It is the career politicians who have no incentive to do the right thing for Illinois, but, rather use the pension funds to spend Illinois to the worst debt in the country. Every payday, the employee portion is deducted from the paychecks of hardworking citizens and the politicians continue to defer the City, State and County portion for wasteful programs and slush funds. I understand the problem and can get to the root cause to address pension reform head on.

To help drive accountability, I will push to implement term limits for Illinois elected officials. With term limits, we can eliminate the culture of patronage and the resulting corruption that allows politicians to stay in office for decades, all the while becoming rich. I commit to providing total transparency to my office and what is happening in Springfield. As informed citizens, we can make a difference.

A recent study revealed that more than half of Illinois residents want to leave the state because of high taxes, wasteful spending and corruption. Through my years of service and giving back to Illinois, I know what we need to bring Illinois back to the state it once was. With your support, working together, we can make Illinois and the 19th District proud.
