Dr. Denis Detzel has had an interesting life. He grew up in a middle class family living with his Great Grandfather, Grandfather, Grandmother, Mother, Father, and Brother (an integrated family unit with contrasting points of view).
He began his career as a hospital pot washer, then became an assistant pharmacist. He joined the National Teacher Corps and taught in an elementary and junior high school. He founded The Learning Exchange in Evanston, became a Manager of Corporate Responsibility for CNA Financial Corporation, then Director of Public Policy and Director of Affirmative Action for McDonald’s Corporation. He received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Administration and Public Policy and joined the Hay Group where he became an International Partner. He then wrote a book, Managing to Keep the Customer, with Bob Desatnick and founded his own organization consulting firm (Eastlake). While with Eastlake he served as a Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for SECURA Insurance and Financial Services, and Vice President, Eastern Operations for U.S. Cellular Corporation. Denis has also taught and consulted with Northwestern, Mundelein, American, and Rutgers Universities and has served on the Boards of Directors of several not-for-profit and for-profit organizations.
Throughout his career Denis has always wondered why dysfunctional things persisted. One of his primary objectives as a legislator will be to assist in introducing democracy to Chicago politics. Democracy seems to require more than one party and one point of view. His special interests are civil rights, rational economics, jobs, the environment, and transportation alternatives.
