County Board Votes to Repeal Stroger 1% Sales Tax 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Since the Commissioners KNEW Stroger would never allow passage of the tax repeal, Commissioners voted to repeal it, just so they could go on record for wanting the repeal. BUT - for those who voted for it in the first place cannot hide behind this. The only worthwhile action that may come of this is, by vetoing the tax repeal, Stroger just signed his death papers for any elected office ever again, including re-election to the Board.

Today’s vote:

Yes on repealing sales tax increase (12)
Democrats: Joan Murphy, Joseph Mario Moreno, John Daley, Larry Suffredin, Roberto Maldonado, Bridget Gainer, Forrest Claypool.
Republicans: Gregg Goslin, Tim Schneider, Tony Peraica, Elizabeth Gorman, Peter Silvestri.

No on repealing sales tax increase (3)Democrats: Robert Steele, Jerry Butler, William Beavers.
Absent (2): Democrats Deborah Sims, Earleen Collins.

Jim,

Too bad we missed the vote. This may be a short lived victory because Stroger can veto it with ease. I heard Stroger was visibly upset at the vote. It would have been fun to see that reaction.

Stroger said he will veto it tomorrow. I heard some pundits say if he does veto it, he is commiting political suicide, not that he has a chance of winning anyway.

I am also hearing rumors he isn't going to run again. Either way, I will be ecstatic when this clown is gone. He doesn't provide comic relief any more, he is just pathetic.

Also, is Donna Dunnings pregnant with Tony Cole's baby?

Well, we're certainly hopeful he will run again, as he's FAR easier to beat than Claypool. Unfortunately, he'll never make it past the primary. Paul Vallas has made it known publicly that he wants to run for Board President as a Republican, however that's only because he doesn't want a primary fight, (and he said he doesn't have the time to run for governor). Kind of makes you wonder what he's REALLY up to.

Can you really trust Vallas? If Claypool wasn't in the Democrat race, I suspect Vallas would run as a Democrat.

Vallas would prefer to run for Governor. What if Lisa Madigan decided she was really more interested in raising her kids and shocked everyone by not running. Do you think Vallas would jump into the Governor's race as a Democrat. These shifty characters are not necessarily loyal.

On the plus side, Vallas has very good name recognition. We will have to see if he can raise any money.

i don't know about you all. but i'm not convinced that the actions that were taken in this "repeal" of the tax hike was done because the liberal dummycrats on the board have "grown a sack" and are now concerned with fiscal responsibility and listening to us angry citizens.

this was done simply to say "screw you" to Stroger. he's on borrowed time now and has lost the support of the machine. this vote is simply about symbolism. Stroger will not be re-elected in 2010.

I think the Dunnings scandal made Todd Stroger radioactive and now the Dems are heading for safety by calling it a "stimulus". In my opinion, repealing the tax is a vote of no confidence in Stroger's ability to be re-elected.

Stroger stated today he is going to veto the budget. It will be fun to watch the political suicide of that moron.

I think the Commissioners would need 14 of 17 to override veto. I don't think it will happen, Stroger still has too many allies.

There will be political gaming. The commissioners are up in the 2010 election cycle so they will calculate what their constituents and opponent's perception will be. It will be tough to hold the 12 and pick up 2 to overturn the veto.

Murphy is very unlikely to join the 12, but there is no way Collins will join.

Well, they've effectively killed any chance of getting re-elected, anyway. Funny how Stroger held a news conference at Provident Hospital, effectively scaring everyone that he'd have to close it down if not for the additional revenue the latest increase in taxes provides.

Pro-tax Commissioners Beavers, Steele, and Butler, as well as those absent last time - Sims and Collins will undoubtedly have opponents in the primary next year, and since they mostly represent poor, disadvntaged electorates, we should definitely have Republican challengers in those districts to capitalize on this turn of events. Have any R's run there before?

Jim,

We'll have to find out when the next board meeting will be held and finally run our program. What do you think?
